Ben Cruse, a member of Team Tobatí's first service trip in 1999 and a recent graduate from the University of Pennsylvania, helped organize this community service trip designed to benefit Tobatí's schools and public clinic. The team was made up of fifteen students, alumni, and staff from the UPENN's Fox Leadership Program. The team raised money for the following projects and helped with the constructions during their visit.
- The construction of a classroom at CONADOMI high school.
- The construction of a multi-use sports floor at Cap. Pedro Juan Caballero high school.
- The construction of a storage room at El Centro de Salud, Tobatí's public medical clinic.
- The continuing construction of three classrooms at a grade school in the rural village of Rosado, Tobatí.
- The construction of a bathroom and a corridor at a grade school in the poor San Jose Obrero neighborhood in central Tobatí.
The Fox Leadership Program is part of the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Pennsylvania. Meant to imbue undergraduates at Penn with the theories, principles and applications of leadership, The Fox Leadership Program offers students innovative programming that includes public speaking workshops, public events, civic sector leadership initiatives, and interdisciplinary leadership courses. Along with selected faculty and staff, a core group of 25 selected Penn students manage, coordinate, plan, and participate in these co-curricular events that inspire students in the fields of business, politics, the liberal arts, and public service.
The program has continued assisting the team by organizing annual fund-raising concerts.
