Team Tobati XL in the sugarcane fields

From March 11 through March 22, Team Tobatí 2007 also known as Team Tobatí XL worked alongside Paraguayan volunteers on the following projects, which are each geared towards strengthening the educational and healthcare infrastructures offered to the poor of Tobatí, Paraguay.  The team has funded each of these projects and labored for many hours on their construction.  The 134 students, teachers, and K-O alumni that make up Team Tobatí XL are very proud to have been able to join the people of Tobatí in making these projects a reality.  Please click to the right to see pictures of the team's most recent service trip.

  • The construction of a classroom inside Tobatí's artisan collective in central Tobatí.  The classroom will be used to teach sewing techniques to poor artisans in order to export shirts out of Tobatí.
  • The construction of a wall and landscaping work at a small athletic facility in central Tobatí.  This field will serve as a place where the children of Tobatí can safely play soccer, handball, and other sports.
  • The instillation of light posts for the team's basketball court at Escuela Basica #44 Pedro Juan Caballero in central Tobatí.  This will allow the young people of Tobatí to use the court after dark.
  • The construction of a sidewalk and a classroom at Colegio Nacional Pedro Juan Caballero in central Tobatí.  This high school serves well over a thousand students and is severely overcrowded.  It is common to have over 45 students in a class.
  • The painting of Team Tobatí's children's park and benches in the church plaza in central Tobatí.  This park is used by hundreds of children each week.
  • The construction of a classroom at Escuela Basica #1757 "Santa Alena" in Portrero, Tobatí.  This is a small overcrowded school that one passes when entering the Department of Tobatí coming from Caacupe.
  • The construction of a restaurant at the Athletic Complex.  This restaurant will allow the complex to make money when hosting tournaments and practices at the complex.
  • The construction of a classroom at Escuela Basica 3906 "Maestra Telma Salvioni de Cabriza" in the poor rural village of Mompox, Tobatí.  This school currently runs through the 6th grade.  Students upon finishing the 6th grade are forced to walk over a half hour to the nearest middle school.  Because of this distance and other factors, less than 10% of the Mompox students continue their education after the 6th grade.  The classroom we are building will allow the school to offer a 7th grade and the year after an 8th grade.
  • The construction of a sidewalk (20M) at Colegio Nacional Domingo Martinez high school (CONADOMI).  This new sidewalk which will surround the school will greatly enhance the appearance of Tobatí's second high school and also help keep the school clean.
  • Work at an organic sugarcane farm.  The team will help with the clearing of the field.
  • The construction of a classroom at Escuela Basica #692 "Defensores del Chaco" in the poor rural village of 21 de Julio, Tobatí.  This small school suffers from severe overcrowding and under funding.
  • The construction of an outdoor floor at Escuela Basica #491 "Maria Auxiliadora".  This outdoor tile floor will help keep the school clean and will also be used for artistic performances and athletic contests such as "fútbol de salón".
  • Working in Tobatí brick factories, which supply the team with bricks for the team's many projects.  Brick and tile factories are the main industry in Tobatí.  Most boys and men work at these small factories and make between $1 and $2 per day.
  • The construction of a classroom at Escuela Gda. 3907 "Juan Ante Vallejos" in the poor rural village of Costa Alegre, Tobatí.  This school currently runs through the 6th grade.  Students upon finishing the 6th grade are forced to walk over a half hour to the nearest middle school.  Because of this distance and other factors, less than 10% of the Costa Alegre students continue their education after the 6th grade.  The classroom we are building will allow the school to offer a 7th grade and the year after an 8th grade.
  • The construction of an outdoor floor at Escuela Basica #6448 in the poor San José Obrero neighborhood just outside central Tobatí.  This outdoor tile floor will help keep the school clean and will also be used for artistic performances and athletic contests such as "fútbol de salón".
  • The construction of a bathroom and an outdoor floor at Escuela Basica 3904 "Lucio Flores Guanes" in the poor rural village of Jhuybaty, Tobatí.  This small and very poor school is in desperate need of improved infrastructure.  These two projects will greatly help the students and teachers of this under funded institution.
  • Construction and landscaping work at the Community Development center in the poor rural village of Mompox, Tobatí.  This very progressing and well-run center offers adult job training, health education, and other services to the poor of the region.
  • The payment of pediatricians, gynecologists, and other physicians working throughout the year at Tobatí's public clinic (El Centro de Salud).  Team Tobatí makes it possible for these doctors to work at the clinic on a weekly basis.
  • The distribution of toothbrushes, fluoride, soccer balls, and health education pamphlets to all the schools in the 21 villages that make up Tobatí, Paraguay.  Team members will visit each school in Tobatí and will distribute these items and teach English classes.
  • The construction of a children's park (Wyvern Park) in front of the Macchi Education center and the Artisan Collective.  This park will serve neighborhoods filled with poor children who have no where to play.
  • Work at a rural school where Team Tobatí has established a fortified milk program so as to combat malnutrition.  Team members will help prepare the milk and pass it out to the children at this poor rural school.
  • Painting and remodeling at the Reinaldo Macchi Education center and school as well as teaching English and participating in activities with the Macchi students.
