Team Tobati has
partnered with the Association of Hole in the Wall Camps and the Children’s hospital
of Asuncion, Paraguay to create Camp Tapé Jerovía in Tobati, Paraguay. In February,
2011, Team Tobati will open Camp Tapé Jerovía, a summer camp to serve children with
leukemia and other forms of cancer. 2002 K-O graduate and Team Tobati alum

session, Tapé Jerovía will serve 60 children from Paraguay over two weeks with
hopes of serving children from other countries in South America in the future. The director of
the pediatric oncology unit at El Hospital Niños de Acosta Ñu in Asuncion, Paraguay,
will recruit children for the camp, and will dedicate staff and supplies to
support the medical needs of the campers. The camp will take place in Tobati on
the grounds of the Reinaldo Macchi Institute and a nearby athletic complex, El
Complejo Deportivo Juan C. Garcia, which was built by Ron Garcia’s father Juan
Garcia.
The
Association of Hole in the Wall Camps was founded by Paul Newman and leads the largest
global family of camps for children with serious medical conditions. The Global
Partnership Initiative (GPI) is a unique program of the Association that works
in partnership with international and non-governmental organizations to serve
children with serious medical conditions, including HIV and AIDS, from Africa,
Southeast Asia and Latin America where resources are often not available for
year round camps. Built on the Hole in the Wall Camp model, GPI programs are
locally designed, culturally applicable programs that excite, inspire and
empower children to regain their sense of optimism, possibility and hope.
